On the Dettifoss tour we drive into the large lava field of the 1875 eruption in Askja. We admire the amazing scenery formed by both fire and the glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum, the landscape is out this world, no wonder Neil Armstrong came to this place to practise for his Lunar Landing and they brought the Mars Rover here for testing before they sent it to Mars.
Dettifoss Waterfall is located in Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland, and is reputed to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. The water comes from the nearby Vatnajökull glacier, whose sediment-rich runoff colors the water a greyish white. The superlative of “most powerful” comes from its water flow times its fall distance. The water of the wide Jökulsá á fjöllum river falls for more than 44 metres, causing a massive, crashing spray.

We hike one kilometer to Dettifoss and if we have time, we will visit two other waterfalls close by, Selfoss and Hafragilsfoss, which is a little bit further down the canyon from Dettifoss. There we get to admire beautiful rock formations of basalt pillars.
